People choose to follow a dairy free diet for many reasons, the most common reason being intolerant to lactose.

Lactose is a type of sugar found in milk. People who are lactose intolerant have difficulty digesting lactose.

A dairy free diet only includes foods and beverages that do not include milk or milk based products such as cheese, butter, cream, custard, ice cream, whey and casein.
